Cape Town goes green with a fleet of electric buses

Image
The ever-expanding MyCiti buses are making another innovative introduction with the rolling out of the Mother City’s first-ever electric vehicles.
Come June 2017, Cape Town will see a new fleet of eco-friendly buses navigating our roads, as the innovative and slick MyCiti bus service looks set to roll out 10 12-metre-long electric buses.
Aside from an obvious reduction in carbon emission, this new green fleet promises to offer an alternative fuel option for the MyCiti bus services, which are set to grow significantly over the next decade.
The vehicles will be assembled locally in Blackheath, thereby offering job opportunities and skills advances to local workers and suppliers alike.
The operational cost of the electric buses is reported to be “significantly lower – not only in terms of fuel, but also in relation to maintenance, as there are fewer engine parts to service.
This forward-thinking, eco-friendly project will not only help us reduce carbon dioxide emissions significantly, the buses will also mean lower noise pollution and heat, help our city to earn carbon credits, and even ensure a smoother ride for both passengers and drivers.

The legend that is Johnny Clegg is stepping down from public life.

"When a young white immigrant, Johnny Clegg, and a black migrant worker, Sipho Mchunu, first began collaborating musically in apartheid South Africa in the 1970s, the then government, desperate to keep black and white South Africans apart and culturally cauterised,
regarded Clegg’s work as “an insult to the Zulu and their culture”.

So powerful was the music and idea of Juluka (Clegg and Mchunu’s first band)
that it was regarded as a threat to racial division.

Clegg, who is now 63, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015, and is embarking on a final farewell autobiographical world tour before he retires from public life.

Clegg’s contribution to creating a new vision of South Africa – as a musician, songwriter, anthropologist and activist – will belong to the ages. By MARIANNE THAMM."

Thank you for the music. Image
